This is a very common problem for the Xbox360's. There is a variety of reasons this can happen but they are mostly thought to arise form overheating problems in combination to a flawed "X-Clamp" which holds the heat sinks on the CPU's and GPU's. 90% of the time the Ring of Death can be fixed reliably. We only recommend undertaking this service if for some reason your Xbox360 is out of warranty. Microsoft now offers 3 years Warranty for the Ring of Death so unless your Xbox360 has been opened you can send it Back to Microsoft for repair.
The standard repair consists of resoldering of the CPU and GPU, replacement of the faulty "X-Clamp" and a fan mod to help the system stay cooler in the future.
